Notes from the 2007 CSBA School Wellness Conference
What they are being told:
- Stats on obesity and disease. Obesity is a problem
- Adults vs. Children. Children are incapable of making wise choices if they don’t know what they are choosing. They are not considered rational consumers.
- Schools play a role. Legislation related to CA
- Nutrition vs. ability to learn
- Society of convenience
- We raised an entire generation that thinks ketchup packets are a food group
- Stats on what kids are eating
- Average boy eats 35 tsp of sugar a day
- All children are at risk
- Gov’t policy is a contradiction. Eat more fruits and Veggies but they don’t support this through subsidies
- Don’t assume they won’t eat it. They showed proof that they will
- Food leads to complete transformation on all levels.
- More money for the district due to increased attendance and better test scores
- Whole Grain, whole grain, whole grain
- Use all of your resources. Incorporate students and community into the plan. Use Interns!
- Culinary arts – students really want to learn
- The schools on board are making their own salad dressing
- Farm to school really works
- Successful change is evolutionary not revolutionary. It takes time to manifest
- Birthday celebrations - create policy and make all the teachers sign it. Share with parents
- Community outreach is vital
- Child Nutrition Act states that we must safeguard health and well being for our Nation’s children. It’s a National security issue
- Read the books: Systems for staff by Ken Blanchard and Customers come 2nd by Ken Rosenbluth
- HFCS has no place in schools
- Use funding from outside sources and your general fund: Edible School Yard, Network for a Healthier California, Champions for Change, Center for Ecoliteracy
- Universal Breakfast: Offer breakfast for all students everyday - Organic cereal if possible (dry), whole grain muffins, fruit and maybe milk
- Connect everybody
- Increase price of less healthful options

- Make A la Carte more expensive than meals
- Increase price of less healthy options
